There are three main concepts in relation to music videos.
Narrative: The telling of a story via the images that are shown to accompany the video.
An Example of this type of music video is "Miss Missing you" By Fallout Boy.
Concept: Abstract footage/images to company the music.
An example of this type of music video is "No Way" By The Naked and Famous
Performance: Where the band will "Perform" and be recorded. This may consist of any sort of Performance to camera, therefore singing is no the only way this is done. Dancing or playing of instruments are common.
An example of this type of music video is "The Pretender" By Foo Fighters
